To be cool or not to be cool… That is actually the issue, which almost all teenagers live with (or by).
Today I think that the expression “cool” depends a lot on the person who says or hears it. You would think that some people, the “popular” people, think that when they are popular, they are allowed to be selfish, evil and shallow. In real life when they get older and have to get a job, they are going to have to quit the “cool” attitude. Nobody wants to have a self-centred boy/girl running around.
I would say, that the word, “cool” is not just a word, or something you are, it is a lifestyle. I do not know who invented it but it must have been some rich “brand-boss” trying to make even more money. I think it is one of the silliest lifestyles ever invented. It has had so much influence on teenagers’ lives over the past few years and probably before that too.
Imagine that you as a grown up had to wear the latest Gucci-outfit (which actually, if you live by the fashion, is way out too at the time)… You would not get any respect at all if you did not do that. I know that was really exaggerated but it is actually the kind of thoughts really insecure teenagers have. I think that is a pity because if you did not have to live by that expression, teenagers would be much more secure, pay more attention during class and so on.
