After meeting the magician Hauru, Sophie gets cursed by an evil witch called Ødeheksen. The curse makes Sophie turn into an old woman. She flees from her job as hatter and goes to Ødemarken to find out how to raise the course. With a little help from an enchanted scare crow, she finds Hauru’s Castle and stays there for the night.
She meets the fire demon Calcifer, who makes the castle move. Calcifer sees that Sophie is cursed and they make a deal. Sophie will find out how to raise Calcifer’s curse and Calcifer will raise Sophie’s. A boy comes down from upstairs and Sophie presents herself as the new housekeeper.
Sophie starts cleaning the house. While she’s out shopping, Haudo gets back from fighting in the war. When Sophie comes home he’s angry. Sophie has fiddled with the magic products and Hauru’s blonde hair is turned black. He invokes spirits of the dark and the castle starts shaking. Fortunately Sophie gets him calmed down again.
Later at evening Hauru persuades Sophie to go to the King and ask him to let Hauru avoid fighting in the war. At her way Sophie meets Ødeheksen, who’s at her way to the King too. They reach the palace and Sophie is leaded to the witch of the King, madame Sulliman, while Ødeheksen gets caught and drained for magic. Sulliman tries to convince Sophie to surrender Hauru, because he is dangerous and obsessed by a demon. Sophie refuses and Hauru, who has followed Sophie in disguise, helps her to flee from the palace. Sulliman swears to capture Hauru.
