One day when we were young

Mike is the main character in the story. He is 13 years old, and we meet him through the eyes of a third person narrator. Wee follow Mike from childhood to puberty. The story take place in the past. But, Mikey´s situation is presented in an introduction in the year of 1955, and introducing of his two best friends Cecil Baxter and Joey

Malone with whom he forms a triumvirate called The Mesquiteers. The Mesquiteers are three cowboy heroes featuring in a film series, and the boys in the story create a similar universe in which they are heroes.

As a consequence , they will abandon their game. Wild on game, like the boys in the story do, dosen’t rule out playing permanently, but the expressions and ambitions of playing are changed utterly.

The boys start playing their new game: They spy on the girls for the first time! From this point in the story the narrative structure is chronological. The experince of watching the girls lying in their underwear making daisy chains changes the life og Mikey for good. His mind is instantly filled with the vision of his little sister Nelly’s friend Clara Jowett who wore bright red panties and his mind stays filled during the remaining part of the story as he is undergoing a sexual awakening, a sign of puberty.
