What is it like as a young person to live in Denmark? What is special about Denmark? By Lærke Lund My name is Lærke and I am a 15-year-old girl who has lived in Denmark all my life. I live with my mother and my 3 siblings. I'm in the 9th. class at Astrup Friskole. What is it like to live in Denmark as a young person? As a young person, I think it is absolutely fantastic to live in Denmark. People are very quiet no matter if you're in the city or in the countryside. I think there are many good things about Denmark. As a young person, many educational opportunities are available because it is free to go to school and get an education. Young people even get paid to get an education. You get what's called SU. Another good with Denmark I think is that you get free medical care, but in order for us to get free medical care, education and a lot of other things we Danes have to pay about 50% of our wages in tax depending on what you earn. What characterises Denmark? One of the things I think you associate with Denmark is the concept of 'hygge'. 'Hygge' is a word that can’t be translated into other languages. Many Danes associate with 'hygge' is togetherness, trust, relaxation and free from commitments. An example fire in the stove or on a Friday night in front of the TV. The statue of The Little Mermaid is also a thing I associate with Denmark. It's made from H.C. Andersen's adventure ‘The Little Mermaid’ which was published in 1837. It is a bronze statue that stands at Langelinie in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen. The Little Mermaid is one of Denmark's most popular tourist attractions.
