The short story “Girl”, written by Hanif Kureishi, revolves around love. When entering a relationship, there are always fears. But these fears can sometimes develop and grow, if there were problems in the childhood. Aside from dealing with the bond – or lack of the same – in the family, this short story also deals with love between an older man and a younger woman, who comes from different environments, backgrounds and countries.
The main character is Nicole, a 25-years-old woman, living in London with her “older lover” Majid.
Her dad committed suicide, when she was 10 years old. She has a brother and a sister. In an early age, she had to become an adult, and take care of her brother, sister and especially her mother. Her mother has a drinking problem, and ever since she lost her husband, she has been looking for love and affirmation in all the wrong places. Violent men come and go, and Nicole never gets a new father figure in her childhood or youth. Her mother “applies” her bad experiences with men on Nicole, which doesn’t seem to affect Nicole or her thoughts about her relationship with Majid. They both know they’ll wake up with one another. Nicole’s mother doesn’t seem to care for her daughter, and their damaged relationship might also be reflected in the neglected condition of the house and the town.
