As I wrote a couple of weeks ago, I will start to set out what the short story “My son the fanatic” is about.
The story takes place in two people’s everyday life. A father called Parvez and his son Ali. They are immigrants from Pakistan, but very well integrated in England.
Parvez is working as a taxi driver and Ali is an attentive scholar with straight A’s. Suddenly, Parvez begin to be very nervous about his son because of the son’s strange behaviour. Parvez thinks his son is a drug abuser. He meets his friend Bettina. Bettina is a prostitute and is able to explain all characteristics of a drug abuser. Parvez is relieved; all the characteristics do not dispose to Ali’s behaviour.
Parvez starts to watch his son very often and one afternoon Parvez reveals the strange behaviour of his son. Ali is praying in his bedroom in the late afternoons.
The day after, Parvez decides to take Ali out for dinner on a local restaurant to discuss the matter of Ali’s behaviour. During the night at the restaurant, Ali is explaining about his strong faith in Islam. Ali tells Parvez that he will be ready to offer his life for Jihad.
