“My Son the Fanatic” is a story written by the author Hanif Kureishi. The story tells about a very unusual situation for an ordinary family, actually, not quite an ordinary family. Parvez has been working as a taxi driver for almost twenty years. He and his family immigrated to England after some years in Pakistan. Therefore he has decided to contribute to a development in a new Western lifestyle. He changes his way of living, his norms, his habits and his identity which lead his family into a big modification. “He had ordered his own wife to cook port sausages, saying to her, “”You’re not in the village now, this is England. We have to fit in.”””(p. 197 l. 41)
Parvez got his first child several years ago and he named him Ali. Ali is now in his late teenage years and his father has provided him with a good education and therefore Ali has in his mind to become an accountant. His father Parvez seems to be very proud of his own son and he has no problem in bragging about his son’s straight A’s, in front of his Punjabi’s friends. It all appears to be alright for the family, until Parvez notices his son’s strange behavior. Ali has broken up with his English girlfriend who often used to come to his house. Not only has he broken up with his girlfriend and thrown out the old stuff in his room, his whole personality has been changed into a very hard and confident attitude. “If Bettina looked at the boy in anger, he looked back at her with twice as much cold fury.” (p. 201 l. 26) Even when he speaks he explains things with a very low monotonous voice. Anyway, after many considerations and unsuccessful vigils he finally discovers his son’s actions. Ali has started praying, he has decided to become a practising Muslim.
