The film begins with a feather falling to the feet of Forrest Gump, who is sitting at a bus stop in Savannah, Georgia. Forrest sees the feather and picks it up, then he puts it in the book curious George, and starts telling the story of his life to a woman seated next to him. The listeners at the bus stop change regularly throughout his story each showing a different reaction to his narration.
On his first day at school Forrest meets a girl named Jenny Curran, who according to Forrest has the most beautiful name in the world. One day after school Forrest is being threatened by a group of boys because of his leg braces. Jenny tells him to run, and he does so. He lose his leg braces while he is trying to run. During the same year in high school he is threatened by the same group of boys. He runs through a football field which gets him into college on a football scholarship. He surpass at football so much that he become an All-American, and meets John F. Kennedy.
After college Forrest joins the United States Army, there he makes fast friends with Bubba Blue. Forrest promises Bubba when they are in Vietnam that he will get into the shrimp business after the war. Bubba Blue dies in the war.
