In January 1855 a boy named Ned was born in a town called Victoria in Australia. His father, John “Red” Kelly was an Irish convict sent to Australia for stealing two pigs. Red died when Ned was only 11 years old, and left his wife Ellen with the children and Ned as the oldest man in the house.
In 1871 Ned was accused of stealing a horse and was sent to prison for 3 years. When he got out again, he started working in the stables for a rich English family. A policeman named Fitzpatrick, was never on the good side with the Kelly family. One day he dropped by with an arrest warrant on Ned and his brother Dan. Dan lost his temper and started shooting at Fitzpatrick. Meanwhile, Ned was sleeping with a rich English woman. Fitzpatrick accused Ned of shooting him, even though he had an alibi. Unfortunately, the woman wouldn’t help him.
Ned and Dan decided to hide in the woods, accompanied by their friends Joe Byrne and Steve Hart. Ned shot and killed 3 policemen in the woods. Afterwards, the 4 men robbed several banks, and became: “The Kelly Gang”. A policeman named Frances Hare was put on the case. His top priority was to find Ned. A reward on £8.000 was put on Ned’s head. Ned wrote Hare a long letter with his explanations of his actions.
