The study examines the background for the Crusades which took place in the middle ages.
Analysis have shown, that society and religion where inseparable at the medieval time. The Church therefore had a great power-potential. And this potential became useful, when the Byzantine emperor Alexios I, applied Pope Urban II for help, because Muslims were attacking the empire. Pope Urban II realized that it was time to fulfill his dreams by connecting the eastern and western religion under his rule- by starting a Crusade. The pope managed to enable peoples’ needs with his own, by preaching his famous speech in Clermont in the year of 1095. With this emotional speech he managed to start the first crusade.
