Anders is a book critic. He is known to be very harsh. He is standing in line at a bank, behind two women. They put him in a murderous temper, because they are loud. Suddenly two bank robbers, wearing ski masks and carrying weapons enter the bank. The two robbers start to threaten the people in the bank. But this does not seem to concern Anders, who just sees the situation as another crime fiction that he needs to critic. After a few comments from Anders, one of the robbers hears him talking and tells him to be quiet. Anders doesn’t understand the seriousness of the situation and just starts comparing one of the robbers’ lines, to a short story by Hemingway. Only for a few seconds when he smells the robber’s breath, Anders sees the seriousness. After a bit more criticism from Anders, one of the robbers gets tired of him, and shoots him right in the head. Then we “hear” Anders’ thoughts, as the bullet passes through his brain. We hear about what Anders remembers as he is dying and what he doesn’t remember. For instance, he doesn’t remember the persons he loved, or his family. What he does remember is a time in his youth. A grammatical error, a boy from Mississippi saying: “They is”, instead of there is, and him being roused and elated by this.
