Gregory was in 1968 offered a new job at Robben island. He was going to be in charge of one of the highest profile prisoners, Nelson Mandela. He was also in charge of post at the censorship office, due to his fluency in Xhosa, which was the language that the prisoners spoke.
2) What is Gregory's opinion about Black people at the beginning of the film?
In the beginning of the film, Goodbye Bafana, Gregory thinks and sees the black population, as people below whites, and that they shouldn’t have rights.
When Gregory first meets Nelson Mandela, he almost has hatred against him. Gregory thinks he is a terrorist and that many blacks are.
3) How does his opinion change?
Gregory, his wife and kids were walking down a street in town, when they suddenly saw several black people running down the street with policemen chasing them. When the policemen caught the caught the running black people, they started beating them. One of the black women had a baby in her arms, but when a policeman caught her running anxiously away, he led her baby fall to the ground, while dragging its mother away.
Gregory’s daughter was shocked afterwards and wanted an explanation. Gregory tried to explain to her that the mother didn’t have a required pass on her. His daughter then asked “Will that happen to us, if we don’t have a pass on us?”. “No, we are not required to” Gregory tried to explain, but he still didn’t support what’ve just happened.
