The narrator is a fierce Chinese woman who lives in the US.

Her husband has passed away, so she lives with her daughter Natalie, her Irish son-in-law John and their daughter Sophie.

At first the narrator thought Irish people were hard workers. But now she thinks they are lazy and says Irish this and Irish that.

John has no job and can’t take care of Sophie, because he has a depression.

Finally John gets a job and the narrator is bound to babysit Sophie.

It gets difficult to get Sophie to obey. The narrator thinks the solution is to spank her, but Natalie and John think it is talking to her. The narrator spanks Sophie against their will and Sophie begins to obey. Later Sophie tells this to her parents and John gets furious. Natalie has to ask her mother to move out, because she is causing problems for her and John.

Then the narrator moves in with John’s mother Bess. Here the narrator feels at home, because Bess accepts her and says she has become an honorary Irish. Bess tells her sons that the narrator is a permanent resident. This meant a lot to the narrator and after this she says ‘Irish who’.
