IRA was founded after the Easter Rebellion in 1916 and quickly became an organization in the Irish struggle against English domination. IRA played a crucial role in the War of Independence against Great Britain 1918 and then split up into a winger who accepted the partition of Ireland and another who insisted on a total of Ireland under one government. A bloody civil war ended with the maintenance of the partition of Ireland. IRA continued to exist as a primarily Northern Irish organization and despite a series of splits and crises grew and strengthened the organization from 1970 until today. In the 1990s and early 2000, the IRA in an often interrupted peace with Britain to find a political solution to the Northern Ireland question. Mon contended that as a result, in 2005 the armed struggle and has since, under the supervision of former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari and the Secretary General of the ANC in South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, destroyed all weapons. |
