It was early in the morning and the time was about 5 am. My mariners and I lined up the ship so we were ready to sail. We raised the sails, cleaned up the ship and checked the engine if it was okay and at last we were ready to sail. We were going to sail from Sydney to Lisbon, so it was a long trip we moved ourselves into. We expected the travel would take about 1 month, but with some stops in respectively Auckland, Cape Horn, Montevideo, Tristan da Cunha, St. Helena, Ascension and finally Acores, before the trip ends in Lisbon.

But as we had thought the trip didn’t take 1 month at all, because unexpected accidents happened on the way.

The first accident, which took place, was on the midway from Auckland to Cape Horn. It was the crank, which broke, and the piston stocked. So we had to believe in the wind and fortunately it was strong enough to carry us all the way to Cape Horn where we had a stop.

In Cape Horn we made ourselves comfortable because the crank and the piston had to be repaired and we expected that would take two weeks, and it did. So after the two weeks with hard work we continued our trip. But the next accident was already in sight.
