The city is home to the national parliament, law courts, foreign embassies and other important national buildings. New towns have been built in the surrounding countryside since 1960. The SydneysidersSydney is Australia’s biggest city. In addition to that it’s also the country’s main shipping port, and industrial and business centre. Just over one in every five Australian is a Sydneysider. In the year 2000, The Olympic Games were held in Sydney.

OutbacksAlice Springs is the only large town in the outback of Australia. Tourism is becoming very important for the town, even though it is so far from the major towns and cities. Coober Pedy in South Australia is one of Australia’s most unusual areas. The town is a centre for mining opals. About half the people who lives in the town, lives in underground houses, because the climate of the area is so overheated. The town’s name comes from aboriginal words which means ‘Man who lives in a hole’“It’s one of Australia’s most bizarre attractions, though it’s still very fascinating!” says a citizen of the town.
