In 1939 Poland is under attack. Warsaw is being bombed, by the Germans and there is war in the streets. Wladyslaw Szpilman is famous pianist that plays piano in the Polish radio. Wladyslaw and his family are Jews, and during the war, more and more rules are made especially for Jews. Starting with the rule that allows no more than 2000 zloty per family to keep in their homes. Jews can’t walk at the sidewalk, they are forced to wear a blue Star of David when they leave their homes. On Halloween 1940 a new order reaches Warsaw: All Jews are moved to the dirty Warsaw Ghetto. In the ghetto they are being tortured, they have no food and it is difficult to get a job. Wladyslaw is separated from his family, when they are put onto a train, and drown away.
He is working for the Germans, when he meets one of his old friends. A man with a lot of contacts and connections, who are good to know if you want something. He promises Wladyslaw to get him away from the ghetto. He meets with the man and his wife that is going to help him, and he just had time for a little soup before he and the man are moving on.
