Young Forrest Gump is born in Greenbow, Alabama with a crooked spine, forcing him to walk with the support of leg braces from a young age. Overcoming his “handicap”, one day when he is attacked by other children with rocks, his friend Jenny tells him to "run, Forrest, run.” He runs off and suddenly his shin pad breaks off and he discovers that he can run very fast. When he is older a similar incident happens when he is running away from youngsters chasing him in a car. He runs away from them, through a football field where a match is being played, and he is spotted by the coach and signed up for the football team. This running brings him great success with the football team of the University of Alabama. About this time Forrest is spotted on television behind Governor George Wallace. Forrest goes to college while playing football and receives a college degree. On his graduation day, he is approached by an army officer and asked to sign up for the army. During service with the US Army in the Vietnam War, he carries wounded members to safety, earning him the Medal of Honor. Afterwards, he becomes such an expert in playing Ping-Pong that he has to play in China. He becomes a national hero, and earns a large sum of money by saying he likes to use a certain Ping-Pong paddle.
