Mahatma Gandhi: Indiens store leder

Gandhi was born in 1869 in Gujarat, India. He died in 1948. He studied law in London. After studying, he went to South-Africa to work. This is an episode from the movie, Gandhi: Gandhi travelled to South Africa with a train on 1st Class, but the ticket casher said to Gandhi: “if you want to travel on this train, you must go down to the coloured people.” Gandhi refused. The ticket casher said to the guards: take this man’s stuff and himself and kick it out of the train. So the guards took Gandhi’s cloth and threw it out, together with Gandhi. At that time Gandhi realised, that he wanted to change to world.

Gandhi was a man who fought for his country. He wanted India to become a free land.

There were two big religions in India, Hinduism and Islam.

Gandhi lived with his wife and his kids. Devadas, Gandhi's youngest son, had a mission: to document his father's life visually day-by-day, but he died at a premature age in 1957. The name Mahatma Gandhi means: The Great Soul. I think that symbolizes a lot about him, because he had a very great soul. He was a vegetarian, because he didn’t want to eat animals. Because he meant it was inhuman to eat animals. He worked for India's independence from the British rules. And he gave India the awesome power of non-violence. The tradition of non-violence played an important role in the Indian culture. Gandhi showed the world that social and political changes can be achieved not only through violence and terror, but also through love and compassion.
