“Babel” is an American/Mexican movie from 2006, that won a Robert and a Bodil as the best American films, it is written by Guillermo Arriaga, who is known for making films about how fragile a life can be. It takes unexpected turn, because something surprising happens. In the movie we follow, four different stories that are all are connected in some kind of way. It is a movie filled with content, thoughts and expressions.

Please make a summary of the three independent/parallel stories in “Babel” and try to explain in what way they are connected.

You are also welcome to choose just one of the stories and make the summary more detailed.

The movie Babel has three different stories. Even though, I think that the movie has 4 parallel stories. The first out of the four stories are the one with the deaf mute Japanese girl Chieko, who is in her teenage years and very unsure of her personality and sexuality after her mother committed suicide. She is very traumatized by the suicide and sexually frustrated which leads her to expose herself. She lives alone with her dad, who is a very busy man, which they very often are in these parts of the world. (Japan is one of the very hard working countries in the world that is a part of their society and culture and is very natural to work a lot ) The dad used to hunt, and through the movie you think that the mother had committed suicide by jumping from their apartment, but in the end you find out that she had committed suicide by shooting herself in the head. You never get witch one of the story, that are right. The father gave the rifle away as a gift to his very skilled hunting guide Hassan a man from Morocco. Hassan who sells it to Abdullah that is where the second story in the movie starts. The second story begins. It’s a Moroccan family, where the farther Abdullah buy the rifle so his two sons Yussef and Ahmed can shoot jackals, while they are watching the family’s goads. The older brother Ahmed is jealous of the little brother Yussef because he is better at shooting then he are. He is trying to get a little more accept from his father by making the little brother look stupid. An example from the movie is there big brother find his little brother starring at their sister naked. In these countries it’s very unacceptable to have these sexual relationships to a women, and he know that it is very wrong, there for he tends to tell the father, so he can get a higher (status) then the little brother. Later that day, when they are watching the goad the big brother (press) the little brother to shoot after a bus, the bullet hits the American tourist Susan and so the third story starts.Richard and Susan are on a vacation in Morocco to improve their marriage. On a bus tour Susan gets shot and struggles to survive. Richard demands the bus to drive to the nearest village with a doctor. They have many problems communicate with the local people, and they have to wait on the ambulance witch never arrives; they have also problems communicating with their one people from the bus, that in the end leave, fearing more attacks and the head. They think that its terrorists, and suddenly they are in the news all over the world. Back in the USA are Richard and Susan children alone with their Nanny Amelia, and because of the accident with Susan, Amelia is forced to take care of the children, unable to find another to take care of then she decide to take them with her to Mexico, to her sons weeding. At the weeding you see big cultural differences between the children from Mexico and from USA; an example is chasing chickens with or without heads. Instead of sleeping in Mexico Amelia wants to drive back to the states with her nephew that is extremely drunk. He passes the border illegal and leaves the children and Amelia in the dessert; if she doesn’t find any help they are going to die so the leaves the kids to find help. Finally a border officer finds her, and then they are trying to find the kids are they nowhere. Amelia gets under arrest and is informed that the children are found, and their father is very angry with Amelia. She gets deported from the USA after she has been working illegally.
