Amish-kulturen og filmen 'Witness'

The Amish is a form of religion for some people living in the US.

They all live under the same rules and living standards, they live like people in the 17th century. They don’t use either phones or televisions, they don’t even have cars. They all wear clothes similar to each other. The men often wear black hats and suits, and the women wear bonnets which is similar to a hat with very thin fabric. Then they wear dresses all the time, and I like that. When they get married, the men show their promise to their wife by growing out their beards instead of wearing a wedding ring. I think it’s a very exciting way to live, and I am sure that a lot of teenagers these days could use a week or 2 in a little village like that, without a phone or any form of contact to the rest of the world other than letters.

People who live in Amish villages gets around in carts with horses in the front, just like they did in the 17th century.

We saw a movie in class called Witness, which is about a young woman and her son living in an Amish village, they are very isolated until one day when they get to go to the big city. They travel by train to the big city, and it’s the first time her son, Samuel, sees the big city. They are going to visit Samuels aunt, Rachels sister. But when they make a pit stop to switch trains, Samuel needs to go to the bathroom. When he gets into the bathroom, he sees a man get murdered. Afterwards, Samuel and Rachel get involved in lots of police related stuff, which is very opposite of their believes. Rachel and the police officer later gets in something very similar to a relationship. But their relationship is very platonic, and never develops into a real relationship mainly because of the fact that Rachel is Amish, and the police officer is the exact opposite. So, at the end of the movie, they leave each other and if we look at it from my perspective it’s a very sad and unfinished end of a very good movie.
