Oxford was first occupied in Saxon times, and was primary known notorious as “Oxenaforda” and import “Ford of the ox”. Fords being very imperative before the bridge came. It began with the groundwork of St Frideswide’s nunnery in the 8th century and was original mentioned documents in the Anglo-Saxon chronicle in the year 912. In the 10th century Oxford became an important military border town between the kingdoms Mercia and Wessex and was on servable occasions raided by Danes. St Frideswide is the patron saint of both the city and university. In 1191 became a city charter declared in Latin.
