“A Rose for Emily” is written by William Faulkner in 1930. It is a novel which is constructed by mystery. The mystery which takes place behind Miss Emily Grierson shut doors. It is built up by five sections and deals with Miss Emily’s life. In this analysis I will interpret the obscure story which deals with death and an odd illnesses.
The novel is definitely not written chronological, but is built up through a series of flashbacks. Initially the narrator describes the main character, Emily’s funeral and then we hear about her near past. At the end of the story we see that the funeral is a flashback. That is also seen when the townspeople unseal the upstairs bedroom door. At first Emily is portrayed as a young, attractive girl with lots of suitors around her. Her father does not like what he sees and scares them all away. By this the writer makes the story seem more complicated and mysterious which is really exciting for the reader. He creates a world with many dimensions.
Emily remains mysterious through the entire novel. She is doing this by limiting the town’s access to her true identity by hiding in her house. The inhabitants in the town think she is behaving bizarre by refusing to pay her taxes and when she buys the rat poisoning called Arsenic. They conclude that she will kill herself and pities her. They all say “we said it would be the best thing” (pg. 5, line 7)
