Love can be an amazing feeling, but what if it isn’t reciprocal? Can we force our loved ones to stay or is it best to let them go?
In the short story “A Rose for Emily” written by William Faulkner, we witness how love can turn in to horror. Miss Emily is a very respected woman living in a small town. After a hard period in her life she meets, Homer Barron and they fall in love with each other. Suddenly he “disappears” and we found out that he was really murdered at the end.
The short story takes place in a small town, which means it is a rural setting. The fact that it is a small town makes it easy to spread rumors about each other, which would be hard in an urban setting. The women in the short story whisper behind Miss Emily’s back and even accuse her for being “fallen” after they see her a lot with Homer Barron. They believe that Miss Emily slept with him, which the author expresses in the following way:
“She carried her head high enough—even when we believed that she was fallen.”
It would be impossible to spread rumors like this in an urban setting, and that is why William Faulkner has chosen this setting. The town is in the south, which indicates there is a lot of racism and slavery at the time. Miss Emily was a part of a rich and respected family, which reflects in her behavior.
