The integrated engine control system in the ships manage all the processes in communication with the ship's machinery, including main machinery and second machinery. This automation of the machinery's operation is demanding a high communication between the different processes. If a component is on the way to start it revolve, that other processes also need to start to support the components function.

The integrated engine control system has also implications with steering and surveillance:

Fire fighting system with smoke detectors, sprinklers etc.

Fuel tank system

Cargo hold system

Hull surveillance

The administrative computer system

The system become in a state of alarm if a process isn't running properly. The cause of alarm can be for example a parameter value there is overrunning it's limit value, an error in a component and so on.

The alarm is acoustic and/or visual, and it will not stop before there has been a sign up for the alarm.

The system can be programmed to activate the alarm several places on the ship, dependent on which process that have activate the alarm. A sign up for an alarm will as usual consist of two elements: Neutralizing of the acoustic alarm in specific areas, that can take place several places on the ship, and a recognition with only can be done in a operator station. Recognition of the alarm will not exactly stop the state of alarm, but it will only take out the acoustic alarm. Totally deactivating of the state of alarm require that the process that have activated the alarm shall be in its original state.
