The Irish novel is about a victim of the hatred between the Catholics and Protestants that have been going on for a long time in Ireland. The victim is a girl named Chrissy, and is probably a teenager, but there is not told a specific age. She has a little sister named Gemma who adores her very much and wants to be just like her, when she grows up. The relationship between the two sisters is very good – they do each other favors and Gemma is so caring about Chrissy.
She also has a big sister named Anna who studies in Queens University about history and politics. She is nineteen years old, but she was like an old fogey, probably because she was always watching after Chrissy. But that’s because she is concerned, and she isn’t so happy that Chrissy goes out in the evening, because how the people can be. Anna is kind of boring, thinks Chrissy, because she is still dating her childhood sweetheart, so they don’t do much.
Ian is Chrissy’s boyfriend, and he is different from the other boys, Chrissy thinks. He was very polite and mannerly, better-looking, smelled always of expensive aftershave and wore nice clothes. But unlike Chrissy he is a protestant and his father is a lawyer, but she never get to meet him or other family members.
