The tensions between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland dates back as far as the 1500’s. The majority of Northern Ireland’s population are Protestants, who want to remain a part of Great Britain. Despite this, a Catholic minority are fighting to become a part of the Republic of Ireland. This situation combined with conflicts between religious beliefs has caused centuries of tension. Tensions our main character, Chrissy, becomes a victim of.
The short-story, “Good Girl”, is written by Marita Conlon-McKenna and was published in 2001. It is told with an omniscient narrator and the main theme is religion. The story takes place in Ireland or more specifically in Northern Ireland. The moment in time is kept unidentified, but my guess is that the plot takes place in modern time (1990’s). If the environment is rich, middleclass or poor is also unknown, but the nearby cinema, lake and university could indentify that it is a middleclass or even a rich environment our main character lives in. Given that her family is Catholic, Chrissy is most likely to live in a Catholic part of the town. Due to the hatred between the Protestants and Catholics it would be unlikely for the two groups to live in the same areas of town.
