It all started a winter morning. Richard was four years old. Richard and his brother were arguing about if they should be quiet. Richard could not find out what he should do, suddenly he looked at the fireplace, and began to burn all kinds of things like the broom. Then he set fire to the curtains and the house burned down. His father got very angry at him, so Richard was beaten up.
One day his mother told him about a boat called Kate Adams they were going to use. Days after his mother told him about the boat he dreamed about it.
Then one day his mother dragged him down to a boat, it didn’t look like the boat from his dreams, she said they were leaving so they could get to Memphis. When they got to Memphis they lived in a big old house. Richards’s dad was working at night, and was sleeping in the day. When he was sleeping a cat came by and started meowing, Richards dad came out and said kill the kitty. Because of that Richard went over and hanged the kitty. His mother got very angry at him, and said he should bury it. Some of the nights he began to wake up and feel hunger. Instead of food Richard got tea, he was not so happy about it. His mother told him that they couldn’t get food because Richards’s dad had left them. One day his mother wanted to send him down and buy some food, but the other boys from the street roped him and stole his money. He ran back to his mother but she told him that if he didn’t buy the food he couldn’t get back home. So he went out again, but he was prepared this time. He had a stick and he charged the other boys away. That day he won the right to the streets of Memphis.
