The main purpose of the film is to explore what Michael Moore suggests are the reasons for the Columbine High School massacre, and other violent acts with guns.

Michael Moore tries to answer, in his own unique way, the question of why the United States has a higher rate of violent crimes where guns are involved, than other developed nations, such as Germany, Australia and Canada.

Michael Moore makes some main points throughout the documentary, but the one I find most interesting is that “the media plays an important part”. They manipulate us.

He compares American and Canadian television news, and this reveals that the American television focus on the dangerous crimes and criminals more than the Canadian.

The producer behind the popular television show “Cops” says in the film: “Anger does well. Hate does well. Violence does well. Tolerance, understanding, learning to be different does less well.” This is where we have to understand that the media has to make a profit, like any other business.

According to the film, the murder rate has dropped 20 percent in America while the media’s cover of murders and other crimes has gone up 600 percent. This causes that the Americans get scared for absolutely no reason. It is probably easier to be afraid, than to try and understand. If you are told that “these people are dangerous”, then you don’t have to make up your own mind, you just trust what comes out of the little box in front of you.
