Miranda – an essay, first part.Miranda is a story about the young girl Miranda’s journey from being an untroubled girl with a boyfriend, to being a college student far away from home considering about having a baby and leave education for marriage.In the very first beginning we get introduced for the story’s main character; Miranda. Miranda is an eighteen year old girl, living in Los Angeles, California at her parents place. She has a boyfriend called Michael, whom she idolizes.”All that day she thought of Michael” Size 1, line 1. Her pride of being his girlfriend shows up at size 1, line 5-6 “Miranda liked the approval in her parents’ eyes.”Miranda comes from a rich family “She phoned her parents at nine-fifteen, during their cocktail hour.” size 4, line 107-108. The scene in the airport is also described as “not a big deal”, she does not act like, if she was excited about the whole situation. “She met Holly at the terminal and they flew to Boston.” But the most obvious clue is that, her parents have an expensive car; A Corvette.She moves from her parents’ luxurious place to a second-floor apartment on Beacon Street in Boston with Holly. The apartment is not humbly or frugal, on the contrary; they have space enough for themselves and Holly’s nightly visitors. “Holly unfolded the day bed in the living room and Miranda had the bedroom to herself.” Size 2, line 22-23. Holly is a central subordinate character, she is one year older than Miranda, she is in her second year at Boston University. Beside her boyfriend Tom she has a lover. “The boys who came to the apartment were boys she had known last year. There were also some new ones and soon Holly was making love with one of the. His name was Brian.” Holly is very skeptical about Miranda’s decision about having a baby and getting married. She wants to keep all opportunities open. “I’ve never had to get married, and I’ve never had to get an abortion, and nobody owns me.” Size 4, line 93-94.Miranda stays loyal to Michael. Michael is a very polite, young gentleman. “He shook her father’s hand and kissed her mother’s cheek” size 1, line 4-5. In the text he gets described as tall and tanned and has thick curly hair. Another formal fact about him is that he is a law school student. He has an old and dented Plymouth (Nostalgic and normally very expensive car.) He seems to be with good money. That conclusion is based on the fact, that he has his own apartment and an exclusive car. What characterizes his personality is, that he is responsible (he takes the consequences of what, he have done). He takes the father-role immediately, and tries to do what is the best for the mother (or what he thinks, she wants him to) and the upcoming child. “Look, do you want to do it at Thanksgiving? That’ll give me time to arrange things. I can look for another apartment” Size 3, line 69-70. He lets it all up to Miranda, about the marriage and about the decision about having a baby or not.In the story we also make acquaintance with Mirandas parents.They are very skeptical about her pregnancy just like Holly. They try to convince Miranda about having an abortion, and offer the young couple a romantic vacation to Acapulco as bribery. They want her to do her education before getting married, and use themselves as a good example(they describe their marriage as solid, because they were older and educated even working, when they got married) (Size 6, line 175-195).Everything above is told by the story’s teller. The teller is a spy on the wall - an implicit teller, because the person who tells does not have a role in story. The teller has knowledge about the characters thoughts and feelings, which means that the teller is all-knowing
