Sometimes people can succeed in life in spite of all the odds against them. That is in fact what the main character does in the story of Dorian Gray. A shy and well mannered young man somehow turns into a corrupt bastard, by keeping his youthful beauty eternally. A special made painting gradually reveals his inner viciousness to all, while his beauty stands as always.
The main character, Dorian, arrives in London in the late 19th century. He is to move into a mansion that he has inherited after his father’s death. He is all alone in London; he doesn’t know anyone, even though people regale him like nothing else matters. Everything he could ever want is basically served on a silver platter at any time of the day.
Above the fireplace in the hall, there’s a huge painting of Dorian’s father. The painting is to be renewed, now that a new Gray is a resident in the mansion. Basil, who is a friend of the family, starts portraying Dorian as the stunning young man he is. As the painting gets done, Dorian realizes just how beautiful he is, and just what astonishing looks he has.
Because of him being a total newbie in the city, he tends to be a bit naïve and immature in his appearance. Almost straight away he falls under the influence of the amoral and manipulative Lord Henry Wotton, which leads Dorian to a life of increasing wickedness and even violence. As Lord Henry sees the painting along with Dorian’s reaction towards it, he swiftly influences the poor lad’s mind with some thoughts about the future. He makes Dorian believe that he would be nothing without his looks, and that he has to make the best of it while he has the opportunity. In no time, Dorian has sold his soul to the painting without even realizing what really happened.
