Det er en konflikt mellem USA og Sovjetunionen, de to magter bekæmper hinanden på alle andre måder end at kæmpe.
En kommunistisk blok, domineret af Sovjet, og en hel række nationer fra Østeuropa(Polen, Ungarn, Rumænien mm.)
Da kommunisterne overtog magten i Rusland i 1917 blev konflikten mellem de to ideologier tydeligt.
Traktater var ikke særlig vellykket, da der opstod konflikter om, hvor grænserne skulle gå i det nye Europa.
I 1949 står det klar at tysker ville tabe 2. verdenskrig og derfor holdt de allierede et møde om hvordan tyskerne skulle deles.
Tyskland skulle deles i 4 dele
Tyskland skulle betale krigserstatning til sovjet
Polen skulle flyttes mod vest
Sovjet have østlig del af polen, og polen østlige dele af Tyskland
At man skulle danne en ny verdensorganisation.
Atombomben blev en afgørende faktor både i forbindelsen med afslutningen af 2 verdenskrig, og for hele den kolde krig. Amerikanerne kastede 2 A-bomber over Hiroshima den 6 august 1945 og over Nagasaki 9 august 1945.
240.000 japanere dør af bomberne.
15 august 1945 overgav Japan sig af frygt for flere A-bomber.
Fra 1945 – 1948 gik ”jerntæppet” ned i Europa.
