The word, apartheid, is Afrikaans and means separation or being apart. Apartheid was officially introduced, in 1950, by the National Party (NP) which was a political party in South Africa.
The black peoples terms:
The government wanted to make South Africa a “white” country, so they separated the whites from the blacks. The whites would stay where they were already living, and the blacks was sent to different parts of the country. The areas was called “homelands”, and the black people was supposed to live there. The blacks had to stay on 7,5% of the land, and the whites on 92,5%, which wasn't fair, as the blacks formed 70% of the people in South Africa. The land, the blacks got, wasn't any good, and you couldn't farm on it. Also there were made laws for the black people. They couldn't go on strike, they were not allowed to apply for skilled jobs and the had to carry identity papers on at all times or they could get arrested. The public services, was also divided into “for whites/blacks only”, such as beaches, benches, buses, toilets, hospitals and schools.
The African National Congress:
One of the organizations, that fought for the rights of black people was the ANC (African National Congress). They wanted blacks and whites to be equal, and they wanted to abolish the many rules for the black people. But the white government made their work hard, as they banned the ANC and made it illegal, which meant that the members of the ANC couldn't do their work properly.
