1961
The Nobel Peace Price is awarded to the president of the ANC, Dr. Albert Luthuli.
Umkhonto we Sizwe is established. It is the armed wing of the ANC, meaning that they now use weapons to fight apartheid.
The ANC decided to fight the government and the apartheid with violence.
1962
Nelson Mandela was arrested and sent to prison on Robben Island for 5 years - Afterwards he was given life time
FIFA suspends South Africa from competing in the World Cup.
1976
The Soweto uprising. Young students started to protest against being taught African. It started peacefully but the young people ended up with getting killed.
1989/90
The Deutcher, De Klerk, was elected president.
The beginning of the end of the apartheid. The government realized that they had to end this.
1990
Mandela was released from prison after 27 years of imprisoning.
1991
Apartheid ended officially and all the lows was baned. Mandela became the leader of the ANC.
1994
ANC won the “valg” and Mandela and was elected as the new president. This was the first time, the Africans was allowed to vote.
