Apartheid was a system that the government had for 50 years, which took part in separating the rights of black and white people. For example, black people had to sit in the back of the bus.

What was it like to live in South Africa under apartheid?

If you were colored or Indian under the apartheid system, you did not have any rights. You could not vote you could not live where you wanted to and you did not have the freedom of speech.

The white people had all the power and control. They owned the diamonds and the gold and a lot for the land. All the soldiers and police were white too. In 1948, the whites created a system where it was easier for them to keep all of the power and control. They separated South Africans according to the color of their skin.
