Why did I choose this topic?

I chose this topic, because since we first began to talk about South Africa in school, I was fascinated by the way Nelson Mandela could change so much in one country.

What is apartheid?

The word Apartheid is a Dutch (Hollandsk) word for “living apart”. Apartheid is the name given to the system of a government that ruled South Africa from 1948 until 1994.

The system was about ranking. People were legally classified as belonging to a particular racial group: White, Black, Indian or Coloured. The Whites were first class citizens, Indians second best, Coloured third, and the Blacks got the lowest status.

The whites and non-whites lived in two worlds. It meant, there were two copies of everything, beaches, benches, cinemas, trains, school and so on. The whites, had all the power in South Africa, they owned the gold and diamonds and almost all of the land. The police, the soldiers and the government were white too.
