In the movie: “Cry Freedom” we follow Donald Woods who is a chef editor at the liberal Daily Dispatch in South Africa in the late 1970s during the apartheid era of South Africa. The movie is about black rights and how they were treated in Africa.
The movie begins with a close friendship between Donald Woods and Steve Biko who hope that white and blacks can work together and change South Africa. He was an anti-apartheid activist. Unfortunately Steve Biko politics are seen as: “black supremacy”. Donald Woods writes an editorial about a black, young man who is shown on a photo and underneath the picture stands the name Biko.
Steve Biko decides to meet Donald Woods and they become good friends. Donald Woods gets a positive view on Steve Biko. Donald woods fight against police brutality against black people. Six weeks later Donald Woods gives two friends of Biko, Tenjy Mtintso and Mapetla Mohabi, a job on his newspaper. Mapetla takes Donald Woods to a football match for black people. Instead of watching the match Biko holds a speech about how bad black people are treated etc. Donald Woods realize how bad it is and wants to make a change in South Africa.
