Tsotsi (means thug.) is an angry young thief who enjoys gambling with his buddies and stealing from people on the rough streets of Johannesburg. Tsotsi lives in a poor village in South Africa, Soweto, there’s no mercy, they have to survive somehow. One day he and three members of his gang (Boston, Morris, and Butcher.) spot a man with a roll of bills near the subway station, enough to survive the thug streets in South Africa. They board the crowded train and surround him, they then stabbed an old impaired knife in the victim's stomach, and the group flees the scene with the victim's money. Boston (teacher) is deciding to stop the thing with killing innocent people, only thinking about themselves. Tsotsi gets furious and beat him up because he begins to talk about his childhood.
Tsotsi’s real name is David, but he doesn't want to be called that, maybe because of his childhood, he then decides to run away from the trouble he started. In flashbacks, it show the reason why Tsotsi left his family and home: his father ordering him out of the room where his mother was dying of AIDS, Tsotsi wasn’t actually listening to him, he wanted to stay with the mother no matter what, but he was too scared to protest his drunk father. He learns to look out for himself and to take advantage of the weak.
