The short story is about a boy named Nick. One night Nick and his father being awakened by two Indians. The Indians are coming to get Nick’s father, who is a doctor, because there is a woman in the Indian camp, who needs his help. Nick, his father and uncle George sailing with the Indians to the camp. Nick is in his father’s arms, while they are sailing. When they reach the Indian camp, there is light in one of the cabins. They go into the cabin and find the woman. The woman lay in the bunk. She has tried to get a baby in two days now. In the upper bunk her husband is, he is been hurt in one of his legs. Nicks father looks at the woman, and asks the other woman in the cabin, to put some water into the stove. Nick’s father asks Nick to help him. The woman screaming a lot, because she is being in labor. Nick gets afraid. He can’t understand why it hurt so much to give birth. Nick’s father tells him that the woman has pain and he’s forced to perform a caesarean on the woman. Uncle George and the two Indians help Nick’s father, with the caesarean. The woman bites Uncle George in his hand. When the baby is born, Nick’s father discovers that the woman’s husband has committed suicide. Nick’s father tries to get Nick out, so he doesn’t see the man, who has cut from ear to ear. But it’s to late. Nick has discovered the man. When Nick, his father and Uncle George sailing home, Nick feels that he’s immortal, because of the night’s adventures.
