Today something awful happened. I was walking down the hill towards the city centre. Mom and dad were both at work. I walked across the city every day to my aunt’s house, to get some food. Unfortunately something happened and I didn’t know that this could happen in this lovely city as Nagasaki.
It was an ordinary morning and the people were dressed normal, women’s in kimonos or beautiful dresses and men in T- shirts. The streets were full and there were many people, and they were walking to get to their jobs or some other places. Suddenly I saw an old man. He was looking upwards and was holding his hands in front of his eyes, so he couldn’t see the sun and I did the same thing. I said to a woman, who was pushing her baby in a pram, “look parachutes”. I thought that the women were thinking that is had something to do with the war, but it was a beautiful morning in Nagasaki and the war seemed to be far from here. A little while later, everyone in the street was looking upwards. Then I saw a young man, I really don’t know his age but he was young, and he didn’t see me and bumped into me and I felt forward. I remember that I hit the pavement and closed my eyes. In that moment I had closed my eyes, there were a flash. The flash was lasting less than a second and everyone who saw that flash was blind. I couldn’t believe it! And the heat from the flash was so warm that many people were burnt up in no time and their ashes was just flying away. I can’t almost breathe right now while I’m writing this and the only thing I can think about, is the people who died such a horrible death. 75,000 people died. Today I am very thankful to that young man, who banged into me. Unfortunately I also lost my parents and brother that day. I was a little hurt, but thank god I survived. It was many years ago and I am an old women now, but that accident feels like it was yesterday and I hopes that no one will going through something like that again!
