I have selected this subtopic because our topic is crime and punishment, and I think American history X describes Crime and punishment very well. I think it describes the topic well, because we are following someone who commits crime and afterwards is being punished. One year ago we saw the movie American History X in Social Science and since I have seen it once more I find the movie every fascinating and it is filled with a lot of human and social issues.
Derek Vineyard is released on parole after having served three years in prison, from different crimes.
Through his brother Danny we are following Derek’s life before prison and learning almost everything about him. We are following the two brothers in a day to day life. We see in the movie how Derek’s life influences Danny vision on how to behavior in the community.
In the school Danny is a quiet and intelligent student, but his outside signal is roughly and he almost beets everyone who nearly comes by. He is nearly kicked out of school, but the headmaster has faith in him because Danny is magnificent when it comes to writing.
Derek and Danny are new nasitz/ skinheads’ just like their father, so they hate all colored people. When Derek is in prison he meets a black Afro-American guy named Lamont and slowly they become friends. In the mean time Danny is getting involved in some rubbish dirt from his new skinhead environment. Derek wants this to end as soon as possible because Derek was once one of them. And the meeting with Lamont has amended his mindset and sets of values. In Derek’s eyes he is no longer a skinhead, but his acquaintances circle of people still thinks he is. Derek wants to convince his friends that it is not the right way to be.
