Ever since the White Star Line shipping company was established in 1871, they built ships at the Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. At the yard there was a in the design and construction. Shipyard workers were proud to have built many famous ships. On 31 March 1909 began to work on the Titanic, and it went as fast as lighting with building it. First they planted the keel, then they began to mount the hull plates and deck. The plates was up to 9 meter tall and had about 3 million rivets. Titanic's enormous reserve anchor was the largest of the three ship's anchor (Olympic, Titanic and Brittanic). It weighed 15.75 tons. Titanic was powered by two huge steam engines that made the ships two outer fans turn.
British luxury passenger liner sank
Just before midnight, on April 14, 1912, the British luxury passenger liner Titanic sank on route to New York City from Southampton after a collision with a huge iceberg. About 1500 passengers including ship personnel were killed in the disaster.

On board were many rich and famous people. The American millionaires Benjamin Guggenheim, Isodor Straus and John Astor were among the dead.
