Write a summery of the text Children teased and bullied at school over healthy food choices.
The text is about the food choices that children make in their schools. Lucy Ward writes about how children have gained a negative attitude towards healthy food. Many children refuse to change their eating habits in order to prevent being called a “posh, goody-goody girl/boy”. To some children food is no longer a meal you eat with the intention of acquiring a full stomach; it is a likely source that can result into bullying. The children categorize other children after the looks of their lunches. In schoolyards you see all sorts of stereotyped groups, but mostly the kids are divided into the cool kids and the ones who are not cool. Healthy food is out, and unhealthy food is in.
Task 2.
Give an outline on how the four texts try to account for the fact that obesity has become such a serious issue.
In the first text we hear about obesity in America. The article tries to explain obesity by giving immigrant, low income families and unsafe neighbourhoods the blame and responsibility. The preliminary paragraph introduces a family of two people that moves from Mexico to U.S.A. Before moving to U.S.A. they exercised regularly and eat healthy. After moving to U.S.A. they started having troubles with staying away from junk-food and finding the time to exercise. The article hardly mentions America’s own complicity in the growing obesity issue. Perhaps Americas Ministry of Education should improve their education programme, putting more P.E. on the student’s schedules, removing all junk food vending machines on the school area and designing more playful learning measures to advance the students motivation in class.
