A Travel Piece is a short story written by Margaret Arwood. In this story we meet a lady named Annette. She is in her thirties and is a writer who writes a travel column for a Newspaper. She is on her way home from an exotic vacation / job, when the plane she is on, is forced to make an emergency landing in the middle of the pacific ocean in the Caribbean. She ends up in a lifeboat with five other survivors from the plane-crash; Bill, Mike, Julia, Verna and Greg. They are waiting to be rescued and they are suffering from thirst, heat and hunger. They try to find ways to survive. They make masks out of old garbage to protect them from the sun. Many days pass and they haven’t been rescued. Greg, whom I think is the weakest on the boat, ends up drinking seawater and gets delirious. If they don’t do something, Greg will jump overboard die. They realise that they can’t hold him down forever and decide to cut Greg’s throat and drink his blood. Now it is up to Annette to decide whether or not she wants to take part in this. In my opinion, the theme of this short story is “Survival at the fittest”.
