In Mrs. Harker’s own mind, she cannot understand how her husband could take his own life. In her mind, they lived the perfect life. However, I do believe that Mrs. Harker where the insane one in their married. In the short story we get a clear picture, of how obsessive she where with cleaning the house. She needed everything to be spotless, and at the same time beautiful.

We are told that they had some expensive carpets on floor that Mrs. Harker cared a lot about. So much that she chooses to lay down pieces a linoleum on the carpets, to protect them from her husbands “carelessness”. I think she is obsessed of the idea that everything must be perfect, inside and out. She did even make the clothes, that her and her husband were daily. She needed that everyone, and everything around her was perfect, so she took complete charge of their relationship and household.

Comment on the ending

In the ending (and also in the start) of the short story we learn, that a doctor has told Mrs. Harker her husband was psychotic, which was the reason for him to commit the action. In the end, Mrs. Harker states that her husband was even careless in his last moment, when he choose to bleed the rest of his life out on the carpet, instead of the piece of linoleum she had put next to his bed. I understand why her husband took the faith he choose. He is not even “under the whip” anymore. It is more like a giant lasso, surrounding his neck, and it is tightens its grip for every perfect day, that is ending perfectly, for his perfect wife. I believe that his only reason to be in that married is to fulfil the perfect picture. To stand in the back and look perfect, without a meaning and without a soul.
