Karakteranalyse af 'The Bell Jar' og 'The Curious Incident'

The main character in the bell jar, by sylvia Plath is Esther.

We don’t hear much about Esther’s background, but one important thing is that she has been an interne at a magazine in New York. She has been denied a joining a writing course.

And as a consequence of that she has moved to Boston to stay with her mother.

“I was still wearing Betsy’s white blouse and dirndl skirt (…) I hadn’t washed them in my three weeks at home (…) I hadn’t washed my hair for three weeks, either. I hadn’t slept for seven nights.” (p. 223, ll. 12-16)

This shows that she doesn’t really care about her looks, and how she looks in public.

Esther’s inner characterizing. Here is the first thing we notice is that she is tormented by a feeling. A feeling of depression, and this prevents her from living a normal life.

Her depression makes it hard for Esther to do normal things. And makes she the normal things as washing clothes and so as silly.

Before Esther meets doctor Gordon, she hopes that her psychiatrist would fix her problems and find a solution for her. She has a hard time living a normal life because she thinks about death all the time.
