The day 12 February 1993 was the day James Patrick Bulger was abducted, tortured and murdered by two ten year old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables.
James went with his mother, Denise, and the mother’s brother’s girlfriend, Nicola, to the New Strand Shopping Centre. For two minutes Denise let James stand and wait for her. But it would prove to be a huge mistake. In that moment James was waiting, the two boys, Robert and Jon, came by and saw James standing there all by himself. Robert and Jon were bored, they want to steal in the shopping centre, but all the employees asked them to leave, because they knew that the boys should be in school and they were truant. So when they saw James alone in the centre, they decided to kidnap him instead. The boys took James on a 2 mile walk across Liverpool to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, where he was dropped on his head and suffered injuries to his face. During the walk, the boys were seen by 38 people. James had a bump on his forehead and was crying, but most of the people, who had seen them, did nothing to intervene. They were assuming that he was a younger brother. Eventually the boys arrived in the village of Walton, and with Walton Lane Police Station across the road facing them, they hesitated and led James up a step bank to a railway line near the disused Walton and Anfield railway station, where they began to torturing him. They kicked and stamped on him. They threw bricks and stones at him. Batteries were places in James’s mouth. The police believed that some batteries may have been inserted into his butt, although none were found.
