Barack Hussein Obama is the son of an American mother and a black Kenyan father. Obama was born on August 4th, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. From age 6-10, he lived with his mother and step-father in Indonesia, until later returning to Hawaii to attend Punahou School from sixth grade through high school. When his mother became ill, his grandparents came to Hawaii to take care of him, which they continued to do during his teen years. As one of only three black students at the school, Obama became conscious of racism and what it meant to be an African-American. In 1982 Obamas dad died, in a horrible car accident.

As a young fellow Obama began to study at Occidental College in Los Angeles, but only for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York, and graduated in 1983 with a degree in political science. A few years later, he began to study law, at Harvard Law School in 1988. The next year, he met Michelle Robinson (now Obama), his future wife. He graduated from Harvard, in 1991. Obama returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer. He worked at the University of Chicago Law School (1992-2004) first as a lecturer and then as a professor, and helped organize voter registration during Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign.
