The short story tells how a young man finds himself in a little kid that gets left by his father. He takes care of this little boy and tries to give him things that he didn’t get as a child.
The love between a father and his son can be invisible, sometimes because it isn’t there and never had been. In the short story we hear about a young man, who is the first-person narrator. In the story we don’t get told about the main character’s name which also is the narrator.
The reader only needs to read the first sentence of the story to realize the narrator’s position in the story, which is the main character. As following the story begins “It was a Sunday morning when I saw the kid”. The reader sees all things through the narrator’s eyes.
The story is written in past-tense. The first-person narrator helps the reader understand the main character’s thoughts and feelings. It also makes it easier for the reader to identify with the main character. In various flashbacks the reader gets a picture of the narrator’s childhood and his family’s social status in the environment. It also makes the reader understand his position and personality, the low self-esteem and the lack of presence.
