Some might have the thought of immigration to be a problem in the UK, in the excerpt of the novel “Brick Lane” by Monica Ali, she gives the readers her point of view of how it is to be an immigrant in London.
The story tells the reader about how life is in the UK and how different environment there are around the city, right from poor to very rich and crowded places.
This essay will focus on the setting, characterization and theme in the excerpt of the novel.
Nazneen is the main character of the story, there isn’t much information about her, nothing that describes her appearance whatsoever. Anyhow the story follows her from the start to the ending and gives the reader her point of view. Nazneen is from Bangladesh, but has most likely immigrated to London with her partner, who she now lives with in a flat. However, Nazneen doesn’t see her partner all the time, as he leaves for work in the morning and probably won’t be back before the evening, as he’s the only of the two providing money for their home.
Nazneen doesn’t have a lot of knowledge about the city she lives in, as she’s at home most of the time. In the time she’s walking around the city, Nazneen tries to get away from the known and get to places she has never seen before, she wants to explore the city, “The buildings started to seem familiar. She sensed rather than saw, because she had taken care not to notice.” (p.23, ll.31-32)
